2018 Kwita Izina – Rwanda Gorilla naming ceremony

Today all road lead to Northern Province of Rwanda for the special annual occasion of gorilla naming ceremony where a total number of  19 babies will be given names.

This year, a total number of 19 baby gorillas have been produced, a great indication of multiplication of gorilla numbers in the volcanoes national park Rwanda.

This year marks 12 years since the naming occasion has been taking place, a great milestone to the consistence of gorilla conservation efforts in Rwanda.

Like every year, the Kwita Izina gathers thousands of people both local and international to celebrate the lives of gorillas in Rwanda and applaud the great achievement from all the efforts toward conservation.

Why is the Kwita Izina More special this year?

This year the Kwita Izina is especially special because, ever since the drastic move to double the prices of gorilla permits to $1500 from $750, the numbers of visitors visiting the park greatly declined with very few tourists signing up for gorilla trekking in volcanoes national park Rwanda.

With less trekking into the forest by tourist, the national park is getting greener and natural and gorillas more comfortable with their natural habitant

This year a total of 19 new babies born this year have been named, which is the highest number since 2005, and as compared to 2017 where 13 babies were named.

The highest rise in numbers is a clear indication that Rwanda is going the taking the right conservation approach and should be aided by more travels in the conservation fight.

Volcanoes national park Rwanda
