Akagera National Park Prices for 2019

Akagera national park stands as Rwanda’s largest savannah national park offering tourists a number of Rwanda safari options including game drives, boat rides and community walks. Managed by African parks a non-governmental organization focused on conservation managing over 15 national parks across Africa. Thanks to their conservation efforts, Akagera national park is recovered from the effects of the horrific genocide which killed almost all wildlife off the national park. Today, the park offers a number of wildlife which tourists can view while on game drive and boat rides in the park.

Wildlife in Akagera national park includes lions which have recently been introduced in the park about 4 years back and have now reproduced, rhinos, also newly introduced in the park, hyenas, zebras, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, over 10 Antelope species including the oribi, impala, Eland, topi, numerous bird species.

Below are standard park entrances fees for 2019, these prices stand to be changed after 2019 but can altogether remain the same for the next 5 years.

The price affects people from 13 years and above. 12 – 6 years have a special rate while below 6 years don’t pay park entrance in Akagera national park.

Information that visitors should be aware of while visiting Akagera National Park

Half day activities at Akagera national park begin with pickup of visitors at the reception point at 9:00am daily and back at 12:00 pm noon. If a guide exceeds Midday in the park, you will be charged full day park entrance costs. When guides enter the park at midday and above, the guide is still charged half day prices. Full day prices will be charged for guides and visitors exiting the park via the north sector irrespective of the time of entrance in the park. Visitors looking at existing the park via the north are required the drop off their park guide in Kayonza to catch a public bus and drive back to the Akagera national park with transport costs catered for by the park. While some visitors may require the guide to accompany them to Karenge Bush camp for overnight, the park charges an additional $20 for guides food and accommodation at the Karenge camp.

Park entrance fees to Akagera national park include game drives either half, full day or night game drive if sleeping within the park. All fees are paid at once as you enter the park if you are staying 2 or more days in the park. A discount is awarded for clients staying in the park for more than 3 days!, Once you pay for 3 days, you can spend a week in the park with the advantage of the discount give by the park management. While for visitor saying outside the park will pay each day as they enter that park.

All children 5 years and under enter the park free of charge, activity fees rates for children are applicable from  6 – 12 years of age. 13 year olds children are charged the same entrance fees as adults while the discount only apply for 12 years and below.

All visitors must have copies of residency as proof of nationality and residence in order to claim the fees rates. Without your verifying documents, unfortunately international fees will be charged.

For groups of more than 20 Rwandan nationals receive a group discount of 1,500 Rwf and will be charged at 5,000 Rwf per person.

Game drives in the park managed by AMC include the vehicle, driver and a local  guide. Pick-up and drop-off locations are within the south of the park only and if they go to the north, and extra $20 is charged. Half day drives are operated from 6.30am – 11.30am in the morning and 12 – 5pm in the afternoon. Full day drives are run from 6.30am – 5pm.

Night drives in the park  start at 5.30pm and end around 8 – 8.30pm. Your guide will collect you from your hotel and drop you back there only available in the southern part of the park.

Boat rides are scheduled at the following times:

  • 7:30 – 8:30 am
  • 9:00 – 10:00 am
  • 3:00 – 4:00 pm
  • 4:30 – 6:00 pm (sunset trip)

The park can arrange private boat trips charged at a flat rate for the boat, not per person hence its cheaper if you are more than 4 people. These should be booked at non-scheduled times starting between 10.30am – 1.30pm.

Annual park passes are available and allow unlimited access to Akagera for a one-off payment annually. Single, Couple and Family passes are offered by park management too. The annual pass fee includes;

entry permits and vehicle fee payments, but does not include park activities, however, a 10% discount on park activities is offered to Annual Pass holders. Terms and conditions apply – please read them carefully.

Tent hire in the park does not include any bedding or camping equipment – You are requested to come with those
